A NEW KIWI FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM During the summer of 2000, Americans will be among the first people in the world to experience a new taste sensation for the new millennium---smooth-skinned, golden-fleshed, sweet-flavored ZESPRI GOLD Kiwifruit. That's right---gold kiwifruit. Developed by expert New Zealand kiwifruit growers, ZESPRI GOLD Kiwifruit will be available across the country from June through September. The taste of gold-fleshed kiwifruit has been described as a luscious blend of melon, peach and citrus flavors. Biting into a juicy, gold kiwi is a unique taste experience---a striking complement to the vibrant, tangy flavor of traditional green kiwifruit. The appearance of gold kiwifruit sets it apart from green kiwi, as well. Gold kiwifruit sports a quirky beak and smooth, hairless skin on the outside, accompanied by a golden-yellow interior flecked with tiny red and black seeds. It's just as easy to enjoy a gold kiwifruit as it is a green one. Simply cut a yellow-fleshed kiwi in half and scoop out the fruit with a spoon whenever you're looking for a sweet---and healthy---indulgence. Try adding gold kiwifruit to tossed salads or featuring it on fruit plates or in desserts; with its tantalizing flavor and distinctive color, it is sure to be a popular guest at any summer dinner party. SELECT AND HANDLE KIWI CORRECTLY FOR BEST RESULTS When choosing kiwifruit, look for fruit that is plump and smooth-skinned. Gold kiwifruit is usually ready to eat when you purchase it, slightly soft to the touch, like a ripe peach or avocado. Green kiwifruit may be firmer and less ripe in the store, but will ripen at home in three to five days. Remember, the firmer the fruit, the more tart the flavor will be. COOKING WITH KIWI The enzyme found in green kiwifruit also makes it a natural meat tenderizer. Simply peel and mash a kiwifruit and spread the pulp on a tough cut of meat. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes, then lightly scrape the kiwifruit off the meat, discarding the kiwi. NOTABLY NEW ZEALAND The country that introduced the world to kiwifruit is also home to domestic and exotic animals, beautiful terrain and adventurous, free-spirited people. Here are a few fun facts about New Zealand and its kiwifruit: What's in a name? --- Kiwifruit was known as the Chinese Gooseberry until 1959, when New Zealanders gave it the name "Kiwifruit," after their beloved national symbol, the fuzzy, brown Kiwi bird. Rise and shine --- Because of its location near the international date line, New Zealand is the first country in the world to see the dawn of each new day. G'day, mate --- New Zealand's closest neighbor, Australia, is 1,341 miles away, across the Tasman Sea. That's a mouthful --- The longest name of any place in the world belongs to a site in New Zealand: "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauautamateaturipukapukapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu." Translated from aboriginal Maori, it means, literally, "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as landeater, played his flute." It packs a punch --- One serving of two GREEN or GOLD ZESPRI New Zealand Kiwifruit contains as much vitamin C as an orange, as much potassium as a banana and as much fiber as a bowl of bran flakes. And here's the real skinny: Those two kiwis contain just 90 calories. |
